MEET YOUR MENTORS
Linda Joy Myers is president and founder of the National Association of Memoir Writers, and has been a therapist for 35 years in Berkeley, CA.
She’s the award winning author of four books: Don’t Call Me Mother—A Daughter’s Journey from Abandonment to Forgiveness, The Power of Memoir—How to Write Your Healing Story, The Journey of Memoir and Becoming Whole—Writing Your Healing Story. Don’t Call Me Mother and Becoming Whole were finalists in the ForeWord Magazine’s Book of the Year Award. She has taught workshops on writing and healing for over 15 years.
Myers was co-editor for another ForeWord finalist Times They Were A’Changing—Women Remember the 60s & 70s. A speaker and award winning author, she co-teaches the program Write Your Memoir in Six Months, and offers editing, coaching, and mentoring for memoir, nonfiction, and fiction. www.namw.org. Judy L. Mandel is the award-winning author of Replacement Child – a Memoir, Seal Press, 2013. Her book won the 2014 IPPY silver medal award. She is also a marketing writer who has worked with Fortune 100 companies for over 20 years and now heads Mandel Associates in Newington, CT.
Judy’s essays and articles have appeared in Connecticut LIFE, ASJA Monthly, Complete Wellbeing Magazine, Connecticut Authors and Publishers Newsletter, and The Southampton Review. Judy will talk about her journey of writing her award winning memoir–research, voice, and structure, and how writing her memoir helped to heal the past.
Jerry Waxler, M.S., is a memoir expert, teacher, and coach. As a member of the advisory board for the National Association of Memoir Writers, he teaches memoir workshops and has spoken about the Memoir Revolution at the bi-annual Free Memoir Telesummit. He is on the faculty at Northampton Community College in Pennsylvania and is the author of Memoir Revolution: A Social Shift that Uses Your Story to Heal, Connect, and Inspire and Learn to Write Your Memoir in Four Weeks. Jerry’s recent class on Finding Structure in your Memoir was immensely popular. He will talk about structure and theme at the retreat.
His blog Memory Writers Network features hundreds of essays, book reviews, stories, and writing prompts about reading and writing memoirs. He is currently completing a self-help book for writers called How to Become a Writer: Train Your Brain to Increase Confidence, Achieve Goals, and Love Readers available this summer. Jerry is a lifelong learner with a B.A. in Physics from the University of Wisconsin and an M.S. in Counseling Psychology from Villanova University.
